On uploading 101,000 words…

I know I promised a post about Ghana but until that comes, I offer to you a collection of 101 absurd, hilarious, poetic and beautiful images.

I should mention that I know nothing about photography. Hélène’s great eye and my new Nikon D40 (with a spectacular 18-200mm VR lens) made the process painless. As a bonus, the pictures have tons of EXIF tags (including GPS coordinates). Below is one of my favorites.

On my old age…

I turned 26 years old yesterday and I did the same thing I do every night — I stayed in Rwinkwavu, had a beer, worked and enjoyed knowing that life had treated me well so far.

Truth be told, I kind of like celebrating my birthday on days other than October 1st.

A few months back, a few of us went to Indian Khaizana — a popular Indian restaurant in Kigali. Besides having delicious food, Khaizana is apparently known for the spectacular show they put on for patrons celebrating birthdays. Once I’d discovered this, I had no choice but to claim it was birthday.

After dinner, the lights dimmed and we could hear the singing starting. The entire staff came out in crazy getups, formed a congo line and started singing ‘Happy Birthday’ in English. They were clapping and dancing around, and continued to the second verse in French. By the time they had reached the third verse (in Swahili) the entire place was clapping and singing along.

I almost felt bad, but I had gone too far to turn back. I jumped up, asked Derek to join me and we hopped into the congo line and danced around the restaurant.

It was the best not birthday ever.

High resolution pictures of me dancing around Khaizana can be found at http://yanokwa.smugmug.com. In fact, all my Rwanda pictures are in a convenient gallery there, so check it out.

On being back in Rwanda…

Had a spectacular time in Ghana and now I’m recovering from the horribly delayed and turbulent flight back to Kigali. Also, I have about 1000 pictures to sort through and 1000 emails to read. Awesome.

On being in Ghana…

I landed in Ghana a few days ago and all is going well. I finally figured out how to get ‘net service and even now, it’s going through a proxy which is slow and anti-fun.

Anyway, for the next few weeks you can reach me at 024 5291648.

On the volcanoes of Ruhengeri…

Adrienne and I went up to Ruhengeri (gorilla country) to update the OpenMRS install. Rwanda is at the edge of the rainy season so the sky was clear and three out of the eight volcanoes were out. Beautiful, no?
